Cookies for Raya
As most regulars would notice, I did not do any promotions for Eid last year, 2012. That was caused by several factors, actually. Number one factor, I lost my mom before the Eidul Adha celebrations the year before. I was of course, beside myself with grief. This despite several years of conditioning myself that one losses one's mom eventually. But the hard reality is far, far harsher on me. Then, my mother-in-law fell extremely sick, had to be hospitalised and was bedridden. Another trauma for me, as it reminds me of the time my husband fell sick & was bedridden almost in the same ward and in the same manner. After discharged, my sisters-in-law and I took turns in taking care of her. But eventually, she too, had to "leave". And that happened in the final weeks of the month of Ramadhan. As I was busy taking care of her, and juggling work and the kids all at the same time, so I did not have the time to sell any cookies. This year, however, I went back to selling cookies and may this will be better for all of us, Aameen. This time, under this blog and Telekung, Tudung, Etc. page, I pledged 10% of the sale towards helping the Muslims in Syria, via IKRAM for Syria. May Allah grants us ease in helping them, Aameen.

Smart Cookies
Chez Victor caters to our inner child By Ivy Knight
Cookies have a magical ability to transport you back to childhood. If they’re homemade and still warm from the oven, you might as well cue the chirping birds and dancing rainbows. Toronto restaurants have figured out that the way to diners’ hearts is through their dopamine levels, which may explain the appearance of cookies on dessert menus from Grace to Pangaea. At Chez Victor, pastry chef Margaret Ngara is whipping up a trio of nostalgic treats: triple- chocolate macadamia nut, citrus butter, and oatmeal-raisin. We assembled a crackerjack panel of experts to offer tasting notes. Cookie plate, $5. Chez Victor, 30 Mercer St., 416-883-3431.
OATMEAL: “I like the raisins. I could eat three more. Sometimes my sister over-dunks her cookies and freaks out because her milk gets dirty. My brother and I try to show her the proper way to do it.”—Cecilia, age eight, daughter of Canoe’s executive chef, Anthony Walsh
CITRUS: “Lemon is sour when it’s by itself, but when it’s in things with sugar it’s really good. These are lemony, good and tasty. If in the future there were no cookies I’d be ruined.”—Spencer, age nine, son of Patrick McMurray, Starfish owner and champion oyster shucker
CHOCOLATE: “I like the chocolate cookie, of course, duh…because it has chocolate in it. Don’t have these before bed, though, because you’ll be up for a really long time. It’s happened to me a couple of times.”—Noah, age eight, son of Daniel Wahlen, head waiter at the Drake

Kuih Raya Pertama
Masa tu aku baru umur 9 - 10 tahun. Tiba2 arwah bapak aku ada idea bernas, jom buat kuih raya! Errr... okay, kataku. Iyealah, takkan nak bantah kan.... Dia pun bawak la keluar resipi (yang tak berapa nak turun temurun). Namanya chocolate chip cookies. Dari resipi macam senang jadi kami pun kumpulkan bahan2 yang diperlukan. Setelah siap talipon mak kat pejabat (tanya mana lokasi bahan2) akhirnya terkumpul jua semua bahan yang diperlukan.
Kemudian kami anak beranak pun mulalah operasi membuat chocolate chip cookies nya.... Arwak bapak aku mulalah sukat & campurkan bahan2 tu.
My First Cookies
I was only 9 - 10 years old at that time. My late father (who was a genius cook) had this brilliant idea of baking some cookies. He had this recipe, chocolate chip cookies. I was usually his assistant, whilst my mom is usually at work.
So we started getting all the ingredients ready. Had to call mom at the office several times for some items. Then we mixed the ingredients according to the recipe or rather typical of dad, he gauged some ingredient's measurements. Then finally the batter is ready and we placed them in the oven.
About 30 minutes (or so) later, I checked the cookies in the oven. First thing I noticed was the size!! It was huge. Apparently my dad had too much baking powder in the batter. After the cookies cooled, we tasted the cookies. It was salty!! (Sputter!!) I don't know what happened, but it was definitely salty... so there goes the entire batch. Mom was not amused with the state of her kitchen.. So, not only did I failed my first baking lesson but got an earful from mom too!!! :(
Life lesson: never gauge baking stuff! Till today, I dare not change and carefully check especially the measurements of the ingredient. So now, it's not salty anymore :)
